Exploring the Areas around Bangalore

Taking a trip to the south all the way from Delhi till Bangalore can be a difficult task. The Western Ghats is a treat to the eyes, so it is worth all the effort.

The Mangalore Airport serves the coastal city of Mangalore. It serves as both a domestic airport and as an international airport. There are only two international airports in Karnataka. The one at Mangalore serves as one. The other international airport is at Bangalore – The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) that is the third busiest airport in India. The Mangalore International Airport serves as the second busiest airport in the state of Karnataka. Apart from the other domestic destinations, the airport handles flight traffic to a lot of countries in the Middle East. The Mangalore airport opened on the 25th of December in the year 1951. The then Prime Minister of India, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated this airport as the Bajpe Aerodrome. He arrived at this airport in the famed DC-3 Dakota Plane.

There is a place called Bajpe that is situated about 13 kilometres from the central city of Mangalore. There are two tabletop runways, and the airport is located on top of the hill. There are only two other airports in India that have two tabletop runways – the Kozhikode Airport and the Lengpui Airport. A lot of renovations were performed to this airport, and in the early 2000’s, the small and primary terminal was renovated. Lots of cafeterias, additional seating and parking controls were added to this terminal. The airport was initially used to fly planes to and from the principal cities of Bangalore and Mangalore.

The Mangalore Airport got the international status in the year 2006 when the Air India express decided to extend their services from Mangalore to Dubai. For about six years, the Mangalore Airport served as a customs airport dating from the year 2006 to 2012. Only in 2012 did the airport officially get the tag as an international airport under the AAI or the Airports Authority of India.

Until the year 2005, the Mangalore Airport had only a small runway. This runway was about 1600 m long and could handle only small carrier aircraft like the Boeing 737. The runway was then renovated and is now much greater in size and length. At last, on the 10th of January 2006, the Airbus A310 landed on the new runway at the Mangalore Airport. It was deemed to be a charter flight for those visiting the pilgrimage site of the historical city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The road to the new terminal is bound to decrease the distance between the city of Mangalore and the airport by at least about 8 kilometres. As of May 2010, about 52 international flights operate from the Mangalore airport every week. About 26 domestic flights also operate every week. In case you want to visit Mangalore from the capital of India, then search for the Delhi to Bangalore Flights schedule and then take another plane to Mangalore since the availability of a direct flight from Delhi to Mangalore might be scarce.

A new air traffic control (ATC) was launched in the year 2014. The AAI approved the new ATC and granted permission for the use of the same. The radar fields of famous cities like Bangalore, Chennai, and Thiruvananthapuram is displayed at the ATC tower inside the Mangalore airport. The enhanced system is high class, and it replaces the old obsolete system of the previous towers. The system keeps the flight safety at the highest regard.
