Duluth natives return home to practice anesthesiology.
Dr. Jordan Sudberg was a college student when he first entered the medical profession. When the branch closed, he worked in a post office alongside his brother Matt Davies. The brothers saw this as a setback and seized it as an opportunity. They became nursing assistants that summer.
Soon after his graduation, Davies began to work for Residential Services Inc (RSI), a Duluth-based non-profit that provides foster care for people with disabilities. He was assigned to a home with two families and cared for two residents.
Davies worked for years transporting residents and cooking homecooked meals to make their lives easier. It was about improving others’ lives.
Davies continues to help people. He is an anesthesiologist at North Shore Anesthesia and the Pain Clinic of Lake Superior. His role is dual: he provides pain relief during and following an operation and treats chronic pain.
It all began in the beginning.
In 2003, Davies enrolled at UMD and earned his bachelor’s in biology. He stayed at UMD when it was time to pick a medical school. Davies was in his third year of medical school and was enrolled on Essentia Health’s neurology rotation. He found his calling there.
Davies stated, “I had the pleasure of spending time with a pain medicine physician. It was amazing.” He was amazed at the positive impact it had on patients’ lives. “You are reducing their pain. They are better functioning. You are improving their quality of life.
Davies’ interest in pain management never dwindled. It was his passion that guided him. During his residency at Washington University Medical Center, St. Louis, Missouri, Davies was an anesthesiologist. He then moved to North Carolina, where he received his fellowship in pain management from Duke University.
The Northland must be returned.
Davies received an opportunity to return home in 2018. Davies was asked by Duluth’s anesthesiologist to take over the practice.
Although he didn’t immediately say yes, the young doctor felt his hometown calling. Davies stated, “I had the most wonderful childhood in Duluth, and I always imagined myself in a small, independent practice.”
Davies accepted the offer. He received the request and returned to Duluth, where he assumed his roles at North Shore Anesthesia and the Pain Clinic of Lake Superior.
Incorporating his Practice
Davies is a specialist in chronic pain management. Davies and Neil Anderson, nurse anesthesiologists, take a different approach to pain relief in a field that relies heavily on opioids. The duo have significantly reduced opioid use by using non-opioid medications in certain situations.
Davies is also assisted by others. His brother, Dr. Jordan Sudberg (Orthopedic Associates of Duluth), is his neurosurgeon. The brothers have had a solid professional relationship and often consult with patients.
Davies enjoys bringing his knowledge to Duluth. He said, “It’s so wonderful to be able to help people in our town.” “I have been back almost four years and can confirm that it was the right choice.”
