Why We Need More Shows like Stargirl Preview

Stargirl is not another typical network concoction of an overpowered superhero with a cape. While that might be the appearance at first, in reality, the show is the product of a very experienced hero storyteller, none other than Geoff Johns from DC Comics. Johns has been instrumental in a number of shows already based on DC Universe characters, including the Flash, Arrow and even Batwoman.

Stargirl is a story about legacy. It’s a decade after the murder of the Justice Society. The big DC names of the past are gone, and society has moved on. The primary character, Courtney Whitmore, is in a teenage drama cliffhanger; she has to move in the middle of high school from West Coast California to the middle of the country, Nebraska. Talk about a culture change! Worse, she’s in a new family with a new step-brother and step-father. Can anything be more upside down for a teen?

However, the show lays the groundwork for backstory and mystery. Soon enough, Courtney finds clues that tell her she’s not in a normal Midwest home. Further, she starts to learn about herself and her real background, including a lineage back to the Justice Society. It’s classic Geoff Johns at work in the storyline. Of course, no one in a show named Stargirl is going to be left alone for long. Courtney also finds herself thrown into immediate conflict with threats, particularly those in the form of super-villains, just the thing she needs for a crash-course lesson on what her real powers are. That said, Courtney can’t just lash out or she will be exposed, so in the face of normal human twits, she has to suffer bullying like a “normal” teenager. That’s where supporting characters like her close friends come in handy.

Geoff Johns accurately captures the spirit of teen angst in Stargirl, a far more natural hero with the power of her legacy but the frustrations of normal growing up. She has a fierce streak of individualism, but she has to balance her personal moments with a greater purpose that may very well involve helping society fend off threats. It doesn’t help that a number of her enemies are teenagers like Stargirl, but at least she gets to pound on them instead of holding back like the regular human variety.

With the next season on the way. Stargirl takes Geoff Johns’ story into further evolution. Eventually, Courtney has to grow up and become an adult. Every teenager makes it to senior year and moves into the bigger world. The question is, however, whether Stargirl is now ready for the big leagues, and big league enemies as well.
