Common Health Problems In Dogs – What To Do?

Dogs are our family, and like any loved one, we want what’s best for them. However, as much as we try, our dogs still get sick.

Sometimes it isn’t our fault, or anything to do with environmental factors. The majority of the time, illnesses and diseases are a combination of genetics, diet, lifestyle, and the individual dog.

Some common health problems include:

  • Joint Problems

Joint problems in dogs can be caused by a number of different things. Often, it is the result of arthritis, a condition that results when the cartilage between joints breaks down. This can be caused by inflammation, injury, or even genetics.

Other times, joint problems can be caused by dysplasia, a condition in which the bones do not fit together properly. This can be due to poor nutrition, infection, or even congenital defects. No matter what the cause, joint problems can be painful and debilitating for dogs.

Fortunately, there are a number of treatment options available that can help to ease pain and improve mobility. You can help your dog out by supplementing their diet with joint-friendly compounds like glucosamine and chondroitin.

If your dog is showing signs of joint pain, be sure to talk to your veterinarian about the best course of treatment.

  • Dental Problems

Dental problems in dogs are more common than you might think. According to the American Kennel Club, over 80% of dogs show signs of dental disease by the age of three. That’s why it’s so important to keep an eye out for signs of trouble and to take your dog to the vet for regular check-ups.

The most common dental problem in dogs is plaque build-up. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. If not removed, it can harden into tartar, which can cause gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums.

Gingivitis is painful and can lead to bacterial infections. If left unchecked, these infections can damage the jawbone and lead to tooth loss.

There are a few things you can do to help prevent plaque build-up. Firstly, make sure you brush your dog’s teeth regularly with a canine-specific toothpaste. You should also feed your dog crunchy kibble or chew toys, which help to scrape away plaque. Finally, take your dog to the vet for regular check-ups and professional cleanings. By taking these steps, you can help keep your dog’s teeth healthy and avoid costly dental problems down the road.

  1. Digestive Problems

Some breeds are more predisposed than others to suffer from a sensitive tummy. Just like humans, dogs can suffer from digestive problems. The most common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

However, there are a number of different factors that can contribute to digestive problems in dogs, including overeating, eating too quickly, stress, and allergies. Some dogs may also be more prone to digestive problems due to genetic factors.

Fortunately, there are a number of things that owners can do to help their dogs avoid digestive problems. For example, feeding smaller meals more often throughout the day can help to prevent overeating.

In addition, many dog food manufacturers provide a variety of foods that are specifically designed to support digestive health in dogs. By taking these simple steps, owners can help their dogs stay healthy and happy.

  1. Allergies

If your dog is sneezing, scratching, and licking incessantly, it may be suffering from allergies. Just like humans, dogs can be allergic to pollen, dust mites, mold, and other common allergens.

Allergies can cause a range of symptoms, including runny eyes, itchy skin, and hot spots. If your dog is experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult with a veterinarian.

Allergies can be managed with medication and lifestyle changes, but they cannot be cured. With the help of a veterinarian, you can make your dog’s life more comfortable and help them enjoy all the things they love.
